Information Overload

When I came to GF Strong they gave me a 3" binder full of information and today I got a book with similar information. The difference is that this book is much easier to read with the same information but written by people who have spinal injuries. It's more relational than theoretical. In addition we got tons of information from the social work assistant dealing with rebates and discounts for various things. All the paperwork reminded me of Eccl. 12:12 "of the making of books there is no end. When I read this I also paid attention for the first time to the previous verse which says "the words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails..." In the same way information by those who suffer the injury can be more useful. Pray I don't suffer information overload!

  1. Hi John, this is Diane Dermott. Pat Ward and Rick Gration's sister. I understand what you are saying about information overload. I remember when I was learning about kidney failure and dialysis with Dad. I didn't understand how we could possibly ever understand any of it let alone go through all the information. I thought my head would explode. But little by little it all made sense to us and it wasn't so frightening any more. God only gives us what he knows we can handle. Patience and faith is such a blessing.
My thoughts and prayers are with you daily. I'm glad Rick and Val got in to see you. They were looking forward to their visit with you.

  2. Hi John...I just had to comment when I read your post today. I just can't comprehend that you would have information overload...you have always loved information and learning many new things as well as coming to an understanding of what you have read and looking for alternatives. I can feel that you are up to the challenge of grasping the information and learning. Sounds as though the days are full at GF Strong. Will continue praying for you.

  3. Hi John:

You can do this through HIM. Remember when you started to learn to drive the car.... and while you are just a young child... back in MY day, it was all standards.

    OHHHHHHH..

And yes, all the synchronized movements of clutches and brakes and putting out of arm to turn left or right.. ( yeah.... older then dirt ) and somehow one day, it all came together.

That was about the same time that we knew that we absolutely knew it all. :)

    In HIM.

  4. Knowing you John and your love of reading and gift of explaining I am sure you will learn and in time find a way to explain the information to make it easier for others to learn from.
We all know that you can learn anything that you set your mind to.

  5. Your Ecclesiates quote gave me a chuckle. I imagine it is all somewhat overwhelming right now. Doesn't it seem fitting, in retrospect, that God gave you ample time to rest before digging into all this work. Somehow it also seems fitting that it is taking place in the beginning of the year. I pray that you and Laverne will always continue to be aware that our awesome God is with you each day and in each struggle and each challenge. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

  6. I remember when I started the first course in my (then) new career. The book was about 1200 pages. I looked at it, leafed through it and became totally overwhelmed. Was I supposed to know all that?, you've got to be kidding me. Then I remembered that we did not have to take anymore than we can handle and that God was there every step of the way. I decided not to do anything else but one page at the time and not to go too far ahead.

Look forward to it as a wonderful adventure, where you will continue to learn and trust. It is wonderful that you have now info from the medical side and the ones who have gone through it, you do not have to reinvent the wheel, you just have to learn how to use it :-)

My 92 year old mother always tells me one is never too old to learn and she practises that every day.
    Wishing you well

  7. This brings back memories when I had to read a child psychology book,(ECE) many moons ago. I had to read the FIRST page 5 times OUTLOUD,to actually understand what they were saying. Eventually I got it and quite enjoyed it!

I think it would be very helpful to read, understand and learn from someone else who has experienced similar things

You can do it John! You have a great memory! Look at all the bible verses and passages you quote..that is a true testimonial.

God bless you and Laverne as you go through all these new challenges together daily.
